Signing Naturally

*Online Version also available

The most popularly used ASL curriculum in the US and Canada has four sets of materials to teach students how to sign naturally! (DawnSignPress)

Signing Naturally Units 1-6 is the first part in a series of curricular materials for the instruction of American Sign Language (ASL) as a second language. The goal is to take students with little or no knowledge of ASL and Deaf Culture and provide them with the skills needed to communicate comfortably in a wide variety of situations in the Deaf community. Cultural information taught throughout class allows students to interact with the Deaf community in a way that is respectful and aware.

Signing Naturally Units 1-6 curriculum’s first and foremost goal of language teaching is to bring a person unable to communicate in ASL to a basic level of communicative competency.

Personal Take

This is the textbook that I used at the beginning of my ASL journey, and I absolutely love it. What sets "Signing Naturally" apart is its comprehensive approach; it contains almost everything you need to learn to start communicating in ASL effectively. But beyond just the language, this book opens up a window into the rich and vibrant world of the Deaf community. It doesn't merely teach you how to sign; it immerses you in Deaf culture, offering invaluable insights and fostering a deep respect for the community. Through engaging exercises and practical applications, "Signing Naturally" helps you not only to learn but also to appreciate the nuances of Deaf culture and etiquette, making it an indispensable resource for any new learner.
